Deep Cleaning your Carpet When You Have Pets

With the holidays fast approaching, I need to prepare my home for my family. We started a new tradition last year, where my family who lives in the cold weather of Wisconsin and Illinois, come to stay with us here in warm and sunny Southern California for Christmas. There are ten of us plus my two dogs, Pablo, our Chihuahua, and Harley our pug. The dogs spend most of the day outside basking in the sun and playing in the yard, while at night; they come in and sleep with us. Needless to say, they track in a lot of dirt and shed like crazy. So today, I want to share some tips for deep cleaning your carpet when you have pets.

This is Pablo and Harley. They have been a part of my family for well over ten years and no matter how much they shed or how much dirt they track in, it’s worth it to clean! I mean, how can you resist these faces?

I was excited to receive the new BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet because I knew it would make cleaning easier.  I was surprised as to how lightweight it was. This makes it easy for me to take it up and down our stairs.

The machine was very easy to use and there are two adjustable cleaning modes. I used the BISSELL 2X Professional Deep Cleaning Formula in the Express Clean Mode because I wanted to use in on my area rugs.  Be sure to check the cleaning instructions on your rugs prior to using the machine. In the Express Clean Mode, it dries in one hour (I’m always in a hurry)! If you like, you can also use the Deep Clean Mode which delivers professional-style results when used with BISSELL Professional Formula.

All you do is put clean hot tap water in the tank along with your chosen formula. Turn on the machine and select your cleaning mode. There is a spray trigger on the handle to apply the cleaning solution. You can see the dirty water in the tank. That’s it! It only took a few minutes and I couldn’t believe how much dirt was in my carpet!

  2. Don’t procrastinate and wait until the day before company is company to start cleaning. Star a lit and tackle the big jobs a week before & do a little from your list each day! You don’t want to get too overwhelmed before everyone comes over!

  3. Nothing is more uninviting that an odor of unknown origin:) Smell out any odors. Zap your kitchen sponge to kill bacteria. Wash bath towels with baking soda to get them fresh for guests. Light candles or wax burners. Spay the inside of trash cans with Lysol before changing the bags. Spray carpets, furniture and curtains with fabreeze. Throw cut up lemon or lime in your garbage disposal and run it for a few mins. Clean out the fridge and place a open box of baking soda inside to catch any food odors. Clean carpets! 🙂

  4. I divide my cleaning tasks into doable segments over a week that way I am not overwhemed on one day and all I may need is some last-minute touch-ups before my guests arrive! I also make a point to clean my carpets and furniture to remove any dirt, stains and hidden odors I may not notice.I use a HEPA air purifier as well so my house stays fresh.

  5. As much as I vaccum the carpet, I always treat myself to professional carpet and furniture cleaning one time per year. Be sure to call way in advance to set the appointment if you want it done near the holidays at the carpet cleaning companies are in high demand this time of year.

  9. I need this! I have a little yorkie who likes to pee in the house and a boxer who then likes to cover it up. Very frustrating! I use a lot a pet stain remover spray. I let it sit for about 5 minutes then scrub, but never feel the carpet is clean enough! Sick of spraying and scrubbing!

  10. My most favorite holiday cleaning tip is to give the task of cleaning to my husband!?
Just kidding (well… Sort of)… During the holidays, I like burning cinnamon scented candles. It freshens the air and the smell of cinnamon makes our house feel Christmas-y!

  11. Try and keep up on the straightening during the activities.. Don’t look obsessed about it. A little here and there will help.

  12. De-clutter before getting the decorations out! This will not only make your festive pieces more noticeable, but make cleaning easier. Don’t forget to light you favorite pine/pumpkin/peppermint candle. Before your guests see your beautifully clean house, they will be welcomed by the inviting scent.

  13. My favorite cleaning tip is to double sheet the toddler bed. When I am done washing Aiden’s sheets I put a fitted sheet on his mattress like normal, but then I flip the mattress and put a fitted sheet on the OTHER side as well. This way if there is a midnight accident I can just take off the wet sheet and flip the bed! No fumbling around for a sheet! 🙂 mattandbranson @ gmail.com
