First Birthday Party DIY Decoration Ideas

Friend and fellow Crafty Chick (and may I add GORGEOUS), Tara Woelfer, did a fabulous job for an Elmo themed first birthday party.  Here are some Birthday Party DIY Decoration Ideas. She used bold primary and secondary colors coordinated with polka dot and checkered patterns. She covered boxes with colorful gift wrap, which is a great way to add height and dimension to any table scape.

Tip: A good investment for any party host or hostess is glass candy jars and glass bowls in various sizes and heights.  Add a ribbon and label to fit any party theme.

The dessert table was adorned with a “sweets” banner a topped with creatively labeled yummy treats like marshmallows, chocolate covered strawberries with sprinkles, colorful candies, cupcakes, and savory cheese popcorn.  Tara also added a special touch by personalizing some of the treats with the birthday boy’s name and age.

The centerpieces were assembled with checkered pinwheels in plastic pales, and pictures of the little man of honor.  Do it yourself Pinwheels are a creative and simple way to add whimsy to any party centerpiece. Use decorative scrapbook paper in any color or pattern to fit any occasion. Also, consider using pages of old novels, children’s books, or magazines depending on the party theme.

Thanks for the inspiration, Tara!! You are amazing!

Fourth of July Craft Ideas

by Dinah Wulf

Fourth of July Craft Ideas

The fourth is in a couple days! It’s a time when we celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence declaring our independence from Great Britain. As Americans we love to celebrate with BBQ’s, picnics, parades, and fireworks so why night liven them up a bit more?  All of these crafts are quite simple, make a great table scape,  and can definitely be achieved by the fourth!

Here are some of my favorite patriotic crafts from Martha Stewart… such inspiring fourth of July craft ideas! Click on this link for how-to instructions.

  • Star Medallion
  • Can-Do Cans
  • Clothespin Pinwheel
  • Fireworks Table Setting
  • Patriotic napkin Rings
  • Red, White, and Blue Medallion

The Can-Do Cans are extremely simple to make and can be made out of old food containers.  Cover them with decorative scrapbook paper and double sided tape, and they can fit any theme or celebration.  Use pastels for a baby shower or bold colors for a birthday party.  Holding snacks like breadsticks or pretzel rods isn’t the only use!  These recycled cans make great plastic utensil holders or flower vases.

The clothespin pinwheels also add a whimsical spin on any theme party.  Easily crafted out of any colored or patterned scrapbook paper, you can make these in a jiffy.  Another creative idea is to use pages of old books to make pinwheels as well.  Use children’s books, comic books, or novels, depending on the occasion.

Carnival or Circus Themed Party

by Dinah Wulf

Carnival or Circus Themed Party

My family and I went to the Strawberry Festival this year over Memorial Day weekend and I took these pictures to inspire one of my best friends because I knew she was planning a carnival/circus theme for her daughter’s first birthday. I took pictures of anything that inspired me including the colorful lighted signs, the giant inflatable prizes, and the abundant walls of furry creatures.

After a little research, I found that one of my favorite blogs, Hostess With The Mostess, had highlighted several parties with a Circus or Carnival inspired theme.  Here are some of them (Jen, I hope this gets your already creative juices flowing). The common elements are bright colors, animals, stripes, and lots of sweet treats!

Memorial Day Craft: Patriotic Votives

Memorial Day Craft: Patriotic Votives

Memorial Day is coming up on Monday. Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is when we honor Americans who have died for our country in all wars. Over 100 years ago, it became a widespread practice to decorate the graves of soldiers by friends and family.

With no surprise, Martha Stewart has come up with two ideas that I love; a table top patriotic votive and glowing hanging votives that I thought would be nice to make and to light in honor of our soldiers.

LA Laker Cupcake Decoration

by Dinah Wulf

So it happens to be NBA Playoff time, and my Los Angeles Lakers aren’t lookin’ too hot right now. I figured I’d better inspire myself and make a good luck cupcake decoration to bring to a Laker party tonight. This was quick and easy and I did it in less than a half an hour. Go Lakers!!!

Materials:

• Computer and printer
• Colored paper
• Circular punches (1” and 2”)
• Glue stick
• Hot glue gun
• Toothpicks

Step 1: Google Images is my best friend. Look up your team’s logo and copy and paste it (as many times as you have cupcakes) on a Word document at 1” in diameter and punch them out.

Step 2: Punch out your team’s contrasting color with a 2” punch.

Step 3: Glue the logo onto the 2” circle and hot glue a toothpick on the back.

Step 4: When the glue is dry, insert them into the center of your cupcake (mine are deliciously store bought) and enjoy!

Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner. Hostess with the Mostessposted some great Cinco de Mayo party ideas like reusing old Coke bottles as vases and making DIY Shrinky Dink mustaches. The Wedding Bistro at Bellenza posted a colorful Fiesta style engagement party with vibrant table settings and piñatas.

DIY Crafts: Parasol Topiaries

by Dinah Wulf

One of my favorite Blogs for party ideas that I stalk daily, Hostess With the Mostess showed how to make these adorable DIY paper parasol topiaries out of inexpensive drink umbrellas. They would make cute decorations for a summer or Cinco de Mayo party (or as my friends would call it, Cinco de Drinko).

My favorite things… dollar bins!

by Dinah Wulf

One of my favorite things EVER is the good ole dollar bin, especially for parties. Many major retailers like Target, Joann Fabric and Craft Stores, and Michaels all have dollar bins with fantastic deals that you can easily personalize. You can find everything from party favors to decorations.

So I picked an absolutely impossible party theme for my daughters first birthday, Rock and Roll Paul Frank, and had to get creative. I know, I know, my daughter is only 9 months old. Good thing I made these party favors three months ago…

These bubbles were four for one dollar.  The originally had an Easter sticker on the top, so I just placed a Paul Frank sticker over it to fit the party theme.

These dollar bin boxes made perfect favor boxes.  I added a personalized label and stuffed it with goodies for each kid.

These are popular rubber band bracelets.  They come in a 12 pack for one dollar.  I broker them up in sets of four and made my own personalized packaging.  This favor cost less than thirty cents each!
