Easy DIY Christmas Ornaments for Kids Made with Cardboard Tubes

Crafting with Toilet Paper Rolls is a great way to upcycle trash. This is a perfect holiday Christmas craft to do with the kids. In fact, it’s really easy and not too messy for little hands. We made this ornament over 11 years ago and still place it on our tree every year.  This flower ornament craft can be used on different holidays like Christmas, Mother’s Day, or during the spring season. It’s also an inexpensive craft for teachers, camp instructors, librarians, and girl scout troops. Here is an Easy DIY Christmas Ornaments for Kids.

Watch the Video

You can watch a quick video tutorial for how to make these easy cardboard tube ornaments on DIY Inspired’s TikTok.

Also consider watching a ton of craft videos on DIY Inspired’s YouTube and DIY Inspired’s Instagram Reels.

Instructions:

First, bend or flatten the tube and cut out rings at the desired width.  Pictured below are seven rings with one toilet paper roll.

Next, arrange your design on a flat surface to make a flower shape. Consider making other shapes as well. Let the child use their imagination to make animal shapes or abstract art.

Carefully glue each piece together.  For adults, it’s easiest to use hot glue because it dries very quickly.  For children, use glue sticks. Glue each flower petal together.

Embellish the ornament any way you wish.  We used a simple rhinestone pictured below. We also like the organic look of the brown paper, but also consider:

  • Painting
  • Glittering
  • Coloring

Using a hole punch or craft punch, punch holes for your ribbon to make an ornament. String your ornament and hang! Tah Dah! Also consider stringing several flowers and use them as a decoration for a party. or classroom.

Here is another example using flower craft punches for the middle of the flower.

  2. I love the idea of slicing up a paper towel or toilet paper roll. You could line a picture frame or mirror with a cool design as well. This little football shape could be the basis for so many creative patterns. You could also point the ends “inward” in the opposite direction to make a figure-8 shape to combine with the little footballs.

    1. You are so creative! I love the idea of lining a mirror for an entryway. You can purchase mirrors for next to nothing at thrift stores, especially during this time of year.
