My daughter and I visited the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, California for the first time the other day. They were in the middle of a change; however there was still a lot to do. Our favorite part was the Eco Challenge exhibit sponsored by OC Waste and Recycling. There were three sections, the Eco Garage, The Race to Recycle, and the Discovery Market.
The Eco Garage has an interactive game where participants are given a scanner and knowledge is put to the test as to which items are considered hazardous waste. Fifteen items correct is a perfect score.
The Race to Recycle was so much fun. I think Mia played it a dozen times! Teaching mindfulness of conserving space in landfills, there is a conveyor belt full of recyclables, household hazardous waste, including e-waste, green/yard waste and landfill waste and must be sorted correctly to win. Four people can play at a time, and the one who sorts the most correctly in the shortest amount of time wins.
I think the Discovery Market was my favorite (I took the most pictures there!). Each person is given a shopping cart. There is a computer screen that gives you a shopping list of what to buy. The focus is learning to identify environmentally friendly packaging and demonstrating the impact of packed materials on the environment.
The market was large and very impressive! It was complete with a produce section, dairy, bakery, seafood and meat section, home and garden, and much more!
At the end there is a checkout where you take a digital photo.
We had such a fantastic time learning in a new way. We will definitely be back soon!
