Trash to Treasure Ideas: Repurposed Shutters

Shutters are probably the one item that you can find in every flea market, garage sale, salvage yard, or recycling stores like Habitat for Humanity Restore.  Not only are they abundant, but they are usually inexpensive. With a little paint and creativity, you can literally turn trash into treasure. Check out my trash to treasure guide for why you should buy furniture secondhand. It also includes a list of trash to treasure tips and project ideas.

Here are some great ideas for repurposed shutters.

In my search to find DIY inspiration for repurposed shutters, I found that most were used for organization.  Shutters could be used for organizing everything from mail to potted plants or from family photos and post cards to kitchen utensils.

  1. Hi Dinah,

I just love your site and wanted to comment on this article about the repurposed old shutters. I love all the pictures because they give so many different ideas, but the one that I love was the first one for the bathroom. Putting the wire basket on the front of the shutter is so shabby chic and very cute.
Thanks for posting this article and sharing more ideas with us.

    1. Hi SallyAnn! Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting! I love that one too. I’ve seen so many repurposed shutters and that one is very unexpected and clever. 🙂

  2. Hi, just found a post that leads to your post on shutters. Do you have the specific source for the white shutter with the jars with herbs? I’m interested in how they attached the jars and need the source to find out how.
    Many thanks,
    Cathy

    1. Hi Cathy! I couldn’t find the proper source but I think you could use metal pipe clamps to wrap around the Mason jar and then zip tie it to the shutter in the back. I hope this helps!
