Easy Hula Lilo and Stitch Family Halloween Costumes

We are so excited to be inspired by Lilo and Stitch this year for our Family Halloween costumes! I shared my daughter’s DIY Stitch costume and their Scrump and 626 trick or treat pails separately because of all the detail, but here are the rest of the Lilo and Stitch family Halloween costumes.

DIY Lilo Shirt

You can make this as a shirt like I did or use this tutorial to make a Lilo dress by using an oversized shirt or red cotton dress.

Materials

Cricut Machine
White Iron-On Vinyl
Red T Shirt
Cricut Heat Press
Weeder
Towel

Instructions:

Use the Cricut Design Space to find a palm leave. I used a leaf from the Cricut library and made them about five inches long.
Cut the leaves out on white Iron-On Vinyl and weed them.
Place a clean towel down on your surface and then place the shirt on top. Use the Cricut Press set to 315° and thirty seconds. Hold down lightly.
Allow them to cool completely and remove the plastic.
Repeat on the back of the shirt.

Felt Leaves Accessories

To make the leaf headpiece, wristlets, and anklets I hand cut each leaf with the help of my mother-in-law. We did this while we watched TV together.

Since I made these for the whole family, used 1.5” yards to make:

8 Wristlets
8 Anklets
3 Head Pieces

Materials:

Green Felt
Scissors
1mm Elastic
Punch or Skewer (to poke holes)
White Glue

Instructions:

Note that the lengths and number of leaves varied. I had to constantly check on each person to make sure they were long enough.

Cut out 3” wide stripes of felt (the leaves are 3” long). Cut out the leaves letting one end go into a point. We cut two layers at a time.
Using a skewer or punch, poke two holes along the flat side.
Place a small dab of white glue on the ends of the elastic and allow it to dry. This will make is easier for you to insert and weave into the leaf holes.
Sew each leaf onto the elastic one by one. Once you reach the desired length, knot the two ends together.

DIY Artificial Plumeria Lei

I used the same leaves as I did for the leaf accessories above and purchased the plumeria leaves on Amazon. Below are the affiliate links to the materials I used. This one set of 100 flowers made two adult leis.

Materials:

Felt Leaves
Artificial Plumeria Flowers
1 mm Elastic
Large Needle
Scissors
Fishing Line or Strong Thread

Threading a Needle with Elastic

To thread elastic through a needle, make a loop with fishing line. Insert the loop through the needle head. Loop the elastic through the fishing line loop and bend and pull through the needle eye. Here is an Instagram Reel I made on how to thread a needle with elastic.

Instructions:

Simple thread the flowers and leaves onto the elastic. I used 3-4 flowers in between a leaf. One lei used fifty flowers. Here is an Instagram Reel on how I made the plumeria lei.

DIY Felt “Grass” Skirt

Measurements for the skirt vary. You will need to measure from the waist to the knee to get the leaf length. I used about 4.5 yards of felt for all four skirts. Here are the leaf measurements I used:

Adult Male, size large: 4” X 24” – 41 leaves
Adult Female, size small: 4” X 24” – 28 leaves
Tween/Teen, size small: 3” X 18” – 33 leaves
Toddler, size small: 3” X 12” – 28 leaves

Materials:

Green Felt
Elastic
Safety Pin
Scissors
Rotary Cutter
Straight Edge/Yard Stick
Skewer

Instructions:

Cut felt leaves as measured. Cut one end into a point and poke 4-6 holes along the flat end with a skewer.
Place a safety pin on the edge of the elastic to make it easier for you to weave through the felt.
Add each leaf one by one until you have the desired size. Secure the end with a knot.

Final Touches

For my husband I bought a cheap clearance item Hawaiian shirt from Walmart and for me I wore a tank top I already had with black leggings underneath. I hope you like our Lilo and Stitch Family Halloween Costumes! Be sure to check out our family Halloween costumes from years prior for more ideas!
